Topic:   What we do and how we spend Club funds

 

Christmas Shopping Tour: Each year, we request the Elementary schools to provide us with names of 50 children.  Each child is provided with about $50 to buy gifts for family members at local stores.  Food baskets are provided for each family.

Festival Around Town: Club members sell barbeque, hot dogs and hamburgers to raise money for Club projects.

Eyeglasses and Exams: Each year approximately thirty to forty (30-40) residents of Pearisburg and the Eastern district are approved for eye exams and glasses.

Eye Screening of School Students: Annual sight screening is conducted at 3 area schools. Approximately 400 students benefit from this project each year.

Highway Cleanup: Club has cleanup responsibility for one mile of Highway 100 south of Pearisburg. Members devote one evening in October to pick up trash.

Christmas Parade: Lions mascot, Lions cheerleaders and members participate in distributing candy.

Broom & Bulb sale: Once a year, members will sell traditional bulbs and brooms as a fund raiser.

Scout Troop and Cub Pack: The Club is the chartering organization of a Scout Troop and a Cub Pack.  Additionally, we donate funds as needed to them.

Eyeglass collection: Over 3,100 used eyeglasses were collected and delivered to the Roanoke Eyeglasses Recycling Center for local and International distribution.

Boys State Convention: Provide financial support to a participant from Giles High School.

Giles Historical Museum: Contribute donations to support this county facility.

Leader Dog: Participate in support of national leader dog program.

Pin Traders: Most active club east of the Mississippi. Members attend pin swaps in Pennsylvania, Washington, Tennessee, West Virginia and North Carolina. Five to seven (5-7) members participate in each trip.

Little League Sports: The Club donates funds in support of football, basketball and cheerleader teams.

State & Regional meetings: Club actively participates in state conventions and all regional and zone meetings.

Membership meetings: Club dinner meetings are always lively and entertaining.

State/International: Members participate in Sight First, used eyeglasses and other sanctioned organized activities.

College Scholarship: Each year the James H. Mongel scholarship is awarded to one or two Giles High School senior planning to attend Virginia Tech.
